Ozbolat Receives $100,000 Grant from Electric Power Research Institute

January 30, 2012

Ibrahim Ozbolat, assistant professor of mechanical and industrial engineering, has received a $100,000 research grant from the Electric Power Research Institute.

He will research, develop, and demonstrate the technology to leverage the limitations of virtual test and predictive remaining lifetime analysis of printed circuit boards (PCBs) to provide support to electromechanical engineers in nuclear power plants worldwide.

The Predictive Environment for Visualization of Electromechanical Virtual Validation (PREVIEW) is an interactive and immersive 3D environment including predictive physics-based capabilities to support virtual testing of electromechanical assemblies. PREVIEW enables electronics packaging engineers to assess potential shortcomings based on virtual physics-based test capabilities, thus reducing the time of decision making and lowering the cost associated with developing, testing and maintaining PCBs.

The project plan will foster the convergence of component level and product level lifetime analysis and prediction modeling in PREVIEW environment, which has been rarely researched and commercially unavailable due to the design, modeling, visualization and manufacturing limitations.

Ozbolat envisions the next phase of PREVIEW as the integration of physics-based multi-scale modeling, analysis and visualization capability for remaining life-time prediction partnering with Entergy Nuclear-Grand Gulf Nuclear Station and Rockwell Collins.
