Rotorcraft Simulator

about the rotorcraft simulator

The OPL rotorcraft simulator is located in The University of Iowa's Engineering Research Facility. The simulator is used to investigate new flight deck display formats in order to provide rotorcraft pilots with the infromation they need to successfully operate in challenging environments. The design of the simulator enables rapid display prototyping and pilot-in-the-loop human factors feedback.   Advanced display formats enable greater safety by reducing the incidence of spacial disorientation and controlled flight into terrain (CFIT). The formats increase mission capabilities by enabiling pilots to maintain visibility in brown-out, white-out, and other reduced-visibility conditions.  The simulator features a 180-degree view of terrain projected onto a curved screen by three projectors, as well as scene cameras and eye tracking cameras.  It has the capability to simulate brown-out conditions as used in the Rotorcraft Brownout Study.
