Synthetic Flight Bag

Objective:

The goal is to design a system that provides pilots with a view of terrain during unfavorable conditions such as darkness, low visibility from fog, and weather.

Equipment:

  • Synthetic Flight Bag

Background

Controlled Flight into Terrain (CFIT) and Collision with Obstacles remains a leading cause of loss of hull and life in GA. The 2002 Nall Report indicates that most weather-related accidents involved aircraft striking objects or terrain at high airspeeds or crashing out of control, sometimes after pilot-induced structural failure. Also, flight at night increases the severity of crashes. One of the leading causes is lack of situation awareness in conditions of reduced visibility.

NASA, under the Aviation Safety and Security Program (AvSSP) has been conducting research that has lead to certified Synthetic Vision Systems (SVS). At the present time, these certified systems are very costly. The Operator Performance Laboratory (OPL), in conjunction with AI2, conducted human factors research to determine the optimal display characteristics of a portable, low-cost Synthetic Vision System (SVS). The result of this work is the Synthetic Flight BagTM.

Display

Daylight readable XGA (1024 x 768) touch screen. This display shows an image of the terrain and flight guidance at 153 pixels per inch. USB connector for loading of flight plan. Case milled from billet aluminum.

Features

Shaded and lit worldwide terrain at 6 arc seconds, EFIS style 2D symbology for aircraft state parameters, flight path vector, transparent highway-in-the-sky guidance, flight path based TAWS coloration on Primary Flight Display (PFD), Navigation Display (ND) with shaded and lit terrain, full DAFIF database, smart entry of waypoints, VNAV, Procedures (DP, STAR, SIAP), flight planning, vertical situation indicator (VSI), and XM Weather.
