CETTS

Caterpillar Eye Tracking Toolset

Objective:

The objective of the Caterpillar Eye Tracking Toolset (CETTS) is to provide a set of tools that enable engineers to evaluate and audit cabin layout.  These audits allow engineers to catch potential ergonomic issues earlier in the design process.  Caterpillar, Inc., funds the design of the toolset.

Equipment:

Head and eye tracking systems from companies such as IScan, SmartEye, and Polhemus .

research Methods:

Head and eye tracking systems pinpoint the location and orientation of an operator's head and the direction of the gaze vector from the eye.  The CETTS system transforms the raw information into a graphical and interactive view of the cab.  Gaze vectors point to a 3D rendered version of the cabin.  Video taken from the audit can be overlayed on top of the cab.  Heat maps show where operators spent time fixating their gaze.  User-defined regions of intrest can be selected for analysis.

Audit data can be used to perform several different numerical analyses.  Graphs can show how long operators spent looking in each region of interest and how long operators performed each task and subtask.  The software can show how much an operator needed to translate and rotate their head to complete each task.  CETTS also provides a breakdown of the saccades and fixations the operator performed.

Storyboards can also be created in order to share the results of an audit.  This can be done by assigning segments of time to various tasks and sub-tasks.  Written and audio notes can also be added to describe the events in the recorded file.
