CAT Eye Tracking
Objective:
To develop a simple integration mobile eye tracking system for ergonomic measurement of an operator's visual tendencies, and to develop advanced eye tracking analysis software integrating CAD models with the visual data acquisition. Advanced software capable of analysis to enhance cab design to conform to the operator.
Equipment:
Numerous eye tracking systems were initially reviewed, and two systems were selected for use, SMI and iScan. Eye tracking analysis software was developed by the OPL.
Experimental Design
Eye tracking systems and software were field tested at the Peoria Proving Grounds on a 966G medium wheel loader. Numerous standard operating techniques were performed by operators while data acquisition occurred, such as loading and unloading, S turns, and reversals. Data results were then input into the eye tracking program and tested for proper performance.
Results
Eye tracking analysis software is capable of receiving input from eye tracking systems and integrating data with a machine CAD model. Visual tendencies are capable of being analyzed to optimize cab design and advance development of Caterpillar machines to conform to the operator. Caterpillar is in the process of procuring an SMI eye tracking system for use with the OPL-developed analysis software.
