Driver WOrkload Assessment
Objective:
Create a system that can collect physiological data and physical state data from a driver to predict workload and stress.
Equipment:
Driver Workload Assessment uses a 2001 Sedan. Drivers are asked to perform tasks such as navigation and are monitored through EGI Electroencephalogram (EEG) and the Smarteye Eye Tracking System.
Experimental Design
The study will run 40 subjects performing driving navigation tasks that correspond to low and high workload levels. The driver will navigate a route using the Lexus Navigation System, or a paper map. The EEG, eye tracking, and other state data will be used to develop metrics for workload.
Discussion
The Operator Performance Laboratory instrumented the vehicle. The architecture of the system was designed to give the vehicle a flexibility to match the design of a given experiment. The equipment uses standardized Aircraft Transport Rack enclosures and mounting trays to make the equipment durable and quickly interchangeable. The equipment was carefully integrated to maintain the aesthetic of the interior of the car so it would have little effect on the styling of the vehicle.
