Enrique Leira is an Assistant Professor in Neurology at The University of Iowa. Dr. Leira received his MD degree from the Universidad de Santiago, in Santiago de Compostela (Spain). He has completed a residence in Neurology at Saint Louis University in St. Louis (MO), followed by a fellowship in Cerebrovascular diseases at The University of Iowa. He is Board Certified in Neurology and Vascular Neurology by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He has also completed a Master's of Science degree in Epidemiology at the College of Public Health at The University of Iowa. Dr. Leira has been an amateur radio operator since his adolescence and has always had a passion for electronic experimentation. He is a private pilot and holds PPL licenses in the United States and Spain.
Dr. Leira’s research interests include strategies to improve the care of acute stroke patients. He has pioneered the implementation of clinical trials for stroke patients during their helicopter transportation to a tertiary center as a way to expedite the treatment of patients living in remote rural areas. He has also done research to understand the decision-making processes of professional pilots when responding to a passenger who develops an acute neurological condition in-flight. Dr. Leira has joined the OPL group because of his research interests in the interface between aviation, electronics, and acute neurological conditions.
