Instrumented Lexus

The Instrumented Lexus is the research vehicle used for automotive studies.  The vehicle was instrumented by OPL to match the needs of our research projects.  The instrumentation required the installation of cameras and eye trackers.  The installation process was done so that the interior of the vehicle would not be compromised by the research equipment that was added.  The addition of the equipment allows us to use the vehicle for our Driver Workload Assessment project.  This project involves the monitoring of a test subject while performing tasks such as navigation.  We can then use the data gathered through EEG, eye trackers, and the video cameras to determine metrics for driver workload.

OPL instrumented the vehicle. The architecture of the system was designed to give the vehicle a flexibility to match the design of a given experiment. The equipment uses standardized Aircraft Transport Rack enclosures and mounting trays to make the equipment durable and quickly interchangeable. The equipment was carefully integrated to maintain the aesthetic of the interior of the car so the equipment would have little effect on the styling of the vehicle.
