Senior Research Assistant

 

The Center for Computer-Aided Design, The University of Iowa, is seeking applicants for the position of Senior Research Assistant in support of the Operator Performance Laboratory (OPL) Research Program. Position responsibilities are  to (1) design and program embedded systems and avionics, perform basic and applied design, analysis, and human factors research in avionics systems technologies, contributing to the development of new methodologies and tools to enhance aircraft operator performance, (2) develop and implement test programs and experiments to generate accurate and applicable results that can be used to successfully analyze, verify, and validate the efficacy of flight control systems and methods, (3) assist in the development of related proposals for grant funding, (4) prepare technical reports, journal publications, and related media for dissemination of research results, and (5) train student investigators and conduct continuing education in this research area.

 

The position requires a Masters degree in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science, or Aerospace Engineering, or related field, with a strong background in the application of human factors test and experimental methods and procedures relevant to avionics systems and aircraft operator performance. At least two years experience in embedded and avionics systems testing and analysis and one year concurrent experience in human factors test performance using simulator and airborne test platforms is required. Knowledge of electronics, signal processing, microcomputer programming, C/C++, OpenGL, C-Sharp, control theory, transforms, flight mechanics and aviation human factors, and ARINC 424 and similar data protocols required. Flight test engineer (FTE) experience and knowledge of aviation terminology as related to flight deck equipment is strongly preferred. Excellent oral and written communications skills are essential. Must have demonstrated experience working effectively in a diverse environment. Experience with academic research policies and procedures desirable.
