Associate Research Engineer
The Center for Computer-Aided Design, The University of Iowa, is seeking applicants for the position of Associate Research Engineer in support of the Operator Performance Laboratory (OPL) avionics and flight systems and ground vehicle research programs. Position responsibilities will include (1) measurement and modeling of cognitive aspects of driving and flight, (2) conduct research in cognitive behavior for the purpose of evaluating flight and ground vehicle system operator behavior, control systems functionality, and controls systems engineering improvements, (3) generating scholarly publications supporting the dissemination of research results, (4) act as lead in the preparation and submission of grant proposals to secure research funding in the area of cognitive modeling and experimentation, and (5) conduct general problem-solving and trouble-shooting in support of all OPL efforts. Other responsibilities will include directing the efforts of staff and student personnel.
The position requires a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering, or Human Factors Engineering, or Psychology with Human Factors Engineering focus or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience plus three to five years related experience. Experience in operator cognitive behavior, testing, and evaluation is required, with experience and/or training in aircraft avionics flight test protocols. A record of success in research and development projects is required, as is an established record in productive scholarship supported by substantial publications or the equivalent. Experience in technical management of larger projects or several small projects required. Excellent oral and written communications skills are essential. Must have demonstrated experience working effectively in a diverse environment.
